Beginner’s Manual: How to Choose the Right Ski and Pole Length

Choosing the correct length of skis and poles is one of the most common questions among beginner and recreational skiers. Longer skis provide stability, shorter ones are easier to control. Similarly, poles can significantly influence balance, turning technique and overall comfort on the slope.

How to navigate all this? In this clear manual, you will find recommendations that help everyone choose the ideal setup.

How to choose the right ski length?

Choosing ski length is not only about how tall you are. Equally important are your experience, weight, preferred terrain and the type of skis you choose.

According to ski type:

Each ski category has slightly different recommendations, so it is good to clarify first what you expect from your skis.

Allmountain / allround skis – universal skis suitable for slopes and slightly uneven terrain.
Recommended length: –15 to 0 cm compared to body height.

Slalom skis – short to medium turns, precision, quick edge change.
Recommended length: –20 to –10 cm.

Giant slalom (GS) skis – longer turns and stability at higher speeds.
Recommended length: –10 to +5 cm.

Freeride skis – for off-piste skiing, especially in powder. They are characterised by significant width.
Recommended length: +5 to +15 cm.

Freestyle / park skis – for jumps, tricks and snowparks.
Recommended length: –20 to –5 cm.

Children’s skis – lightweight, softer and easy to control.
Recommended length: –25 to –5 cm.

According to skiing level:

You may be asking: “Should I choose shorter or longer skis?” Your skiing level has a crucial influence on ski length — sometimes even more than height.

Why are shorter skis recommended for beginners?

Shorter skis are:
• easier to control,
• quicker to transition from edge to edge,
• more forgiving of technical mistakes,
• better for learning basic turns.

Why do more experienced skiers prefer longer skis?

Longer skis provide:
• stability at higher speed,
• better snow contact,
• smoother, more precise turns,
• better behaviour in difficult conditions.

Your weight also influences ski selection

  • With lower body weight, it is better to choose slightly shorter and softer skis that bend more easily.
  • With higher body weight, it is advisable to choose skis a few centimetres longer or with a stiffer core — to provide sufficient support.

If after reading these recommendations you are still not sure which ski length is ideal for you, you do not have to rely only on theory. In the Najšport rental and ski equipment shop directly in our resort, the staff will advise you and you can test the skis immediately on the slope. A practical test often reveals more than any chart.

How to choose the right ski pole length?

Ski poles may seem like a simple piece of equipment, but their correct length is just as important as ski length. It affects balance, turn technique and stability while skiing.

How to measure poles correctly?

The simplest method: Turn the pole upside down, hold it under the basket and place the grip on the ground. If your elbow forms a right angle (90°), the length is correct.

What is the ideal length according to height?

You can use a simple formula: Pole length = height × 0.7

Alternatively, a general rule applies: a pole is usually about 50 cm shorter than your height.

Should you buy longer or shorter poles?

  • When deciding, we recommend choosing poles about 5 cm longer.
They help better when pushing on flat terrain and allow more precise pole planting on steeper slopes.
  • For beginners and freestyle skiers, slightly shorter poles are recommended because they simplify movement and reduce the risk of awkward handling.

Most common mistakes when choosing skis and poles:

  • choosing skis only according to height,
  • skis that are too long for beginners,
  • ignoring skier’s weight,
  • poles that are too short,
  • incorrect choice of baskets for the terrain,
  • wrong binding settings (we recommend reading a separate article).

The correct length of skis and poles significantly affects how you ski on the slope. Take into account your height, weight, experience and skiing style.
