How Orava Tastes: Where to Find Nature’s Treasures and Local Specialties
The Orava region offers not only countless experiences but also excellent gastronomy. Whether you’re a fan of traditional cuisine, honest local ingredients, or you simply enjoy discovering new places connected with good food – Orava has something special for you.
In this article, we bring you tips on where to taste the very best of local flavor.
Nature That Smells and Tastes
If you’re looking for the most authentic way to taste Orava, head into the forest. Summer is the ideal time to collect nature’s treasures such as blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, or mushrooms. Locals gather them all summer long, and one of their favorite and proven spots is Kubínska Hoľa – a mountain literally covered with them. All you need to do is step off the marked cycling trail and slow down.
If you don’t feel like picking them yourself, you can still enjoy them in local restaurants – perhaps as blueberry dumplings, pancakes with homemade jam, or yeast cakes that will remind you of childhood. Right in the heart of the ski resort, you’ll find Restaurant Srdcovka, which offers these specialties on its menu. As a bonus, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the Choč Mountains, as well as the Western and High Tatras.
You can even try Orava’s forest fruits in a completely different form – but more on that as you read further.
Orava in Purple
Orava is also rich in various medicinal herbs. One of them is wild thyme, known for its soothing effects and intense aroma, which grows here in abundance. But the most iconic herb of Kubínska Hoľa – and the one that paints its slopes purple – is fireweed (Ivan tea). During summer, it creates a fairytale-like scene that you can enjoy even from the lower cable car.
Besides its visual charm, it’s famous for its anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, and strengthening effects. It contains a high amount of vitamin C and beta-carotene, boosts energy, and according to several sources, is even effective in treating infertility.
Collecting it can be an easy hike for families with children, or a pleasant slowdown for athletes. If you don’t feel like climbing hills, the cable car runs daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., taking you to the start of your hike while saving time and energy. You can then use the extra time for an adrenaline-filled experience such as mountain trikes or a zipline ride.
Traditional Slovak Cuisine
Orava is a place where tradition is still alive – not only in folklore but also on the plate. You’ll find typical dishes like bryndza dumplings (halušky), homemade pierogi, sauerkraut soup, and goulash in many traditional shepherd’s huts (kolibas). These flavors are a symbol of the honesty and simplicity that are inseparable from Orava.
After all, what would Orava be without halušky? They say even Juraj Jánošík – the legendary outlaw from Terchová, whose story is tied to these surrounding mountains – loved them. They were also popular in nearby Zázrivá, where recipes for authentic Zázrivá dumplings have been passed down for generations.
That’s why we recommend visiting one of the kolibas in these villages during your Orava wanderings – for example, Terchovská koliba Diery – where you might just taste halušky exactly like Jánošík once did.
A Culinary Experience in Orava
If you’re craving an experience that combines multiple activities, Kubínska Hoľa has plenty to offer. After a day of hiking, riding mountain trikes or bikes, you can reward yourself with relaxation – and good food.
At the heart of the resort, right by the ski slope, you’ll find Hotel Green. It’s the ideal choice for those who want to combine a day in nature with great food and the peace of the forest. In its restaurant, you can enjoy classic Slovak dishes while gazing out at the Orava paradise right outside the windows.
On the other hand, if you’re in the mood for a more urban style and a higher level of gastronomy, head to Hotel Park in the very center of Dolný Kubín. The restaurant offers not only à la carte dishes but also a great-value lunch menu on weekdays. It’s open from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and again from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. If you’d like to enjoy a morning coffee before your trip, the hotel’s café provides a pleasant setting from 8:00 a.m. onward.
When the Sweet Tooth Calls
After an intense day filled with adrenaline and sports activities, it’s time to replenish your energy with something sweet. In the already-mentioned café at Hotel Park, you’ll find not only coffee and beverages but also homemade desserts – always fresh and prepared right in the hotel.
If you’re craving something sweet and refreshing, we recommend this summer’s ice cream special, named after the ski resort itself – Kubínska Hoľa. It was created by the well-known local ice cream shop Callo and combines a coconut base with forest fruits, representing both the winter and summer seasons. This sweet-and-tangy harmony of flavors symbolically unites everything Kubínska Hoľa offers throughout the year.
But take note – it’s only available in July and August, and only in Dolný Kubín. It’s definitely worth a try!
When it comes to Orava, it doesn’t matter whether you choose to relax in the heart of nature, seek adrenaline adventures on the meadows of Kubínska Hoľa, or explore traditional flavors in shepherd’s huts and hotel restaurants – Orava offers a unique combination of experiences that awaken all the senses.
Let yourself be guided by the scent of herbs, the taste of homemade cooking, and the beauty of the surrounding mountains – and discover this region from a whole new perspective: through flavor.
