The flat summit allows take-off even in strong winds, and the gentle slope of the mountain with vast open areas on the southern foothills guarantees strong thermal conditions. The entire area of Kubínska hoľa, as well as the Orava region, offers pilots safe flying in excellent thermals, with the possibility to land almost anywhere on the meadows spread across the flat valleys.

After take-off from Kubínska hoľa, it is relatively easy to connect to the ridge of the Malá Fatra and subsequently to Martinské hole, or, after a crossing, to link up with the south-facing ridge of the Choč Mountains or the Western Tatras.

For beginner pilots, the easiest route is along the several-kilometre-long south-facing ridge of Kubínska hoľa, followed by a crossing to Oravská Magura, continuing as far as the Orava reservoir and back.

FLIGHT DESCRIPTION:

Basic flight: Suitable for everyone who wants to try paragliding and enjoy a flight up to 500 metres above the terrain.

flight duration: 10 minutes
landing at the summit or near Hotel Green – depending on conditions
upon request, the flight can be extended (each additional 5 minutes for €10)

Thermal flight: This flight is ideal for enthusiasts for whom just a few minutes and metres above the ground are not enough. The passenger will experience what it feels like to soar in thermal currents, which will carry them together with the pilot to a considerable altitude. The flight reaches up to 1000 metres above the terrain.

Acrobatic flight: Adrenaline lovers will also find something for themselves. Paragliding offers a wide range of acrobatic manoeuvres that make some people’s blood run cold, while others truly enjoy them. If you like intense spins and dynamic movement, this flight is for you. During some manoeuvres, you can experience forces similar to those felt by fighter jet pilots.

In every type of flight, it is possible to take photos or record a video for an additional fee of €10.

Conditions for a tandem flight passenger:

Minimum age: 8 years
Weight: 35 to 120 kg
Minimum height: 135–205 cm

Recommended equipment the passenger should bring:

appropriate clothing for temperatures approximately 10°C lower than the current temperature (it will be continuously windy in the air and the temperature decreases with altitude)
thin gloves, a neck warmer / balaclava, sunglasses / ski goggles
if you are prone to motion sickness, we recommend taking Kinedryl

Information for certified paragliders

Take-off area

The take-off area is located almost at the summit of Kubínska hoľa, in close proximity to the top station of the chairlift. It consists of a spacious, gently sloping mountain meadow covered with low grass and blueberries, which is used as a ski slope during the winter season. Approximately 15–20 paragliders or 10–15 hang gliders can take off simultaneously, while an unlimited number can be flying in the immediate vicinity of the take-off area at the same time. There is no water source available at the take-off site. Water is only available in hotels and restaurants at the lower stations of the chairlift. Due to its gentle slope, the terrain is not suitable for slope soaring. The take-off area can be accessed by chairlift in the SKI PARK Kubínska hoľa resort.

Landing area – parking lot at the lower chairlift station

During the summer season, a relatively large part of the terraced parking lot is designated for paraglider landings. In the winter season, landing is possible in the northern part of this area, which represents approximately 50% of the total space. The area is bordered on the north side by a forest, on the east side by a hotel, on the west side by several trees and the cables of the chairlift. The southern part of the landing area borders another terrace where cars are parked. Above the parking lot, power lines run in an east–west direction. The area has a length of approximately 100 metres in the east–west direction and about 40–50 metres in the north–south direction. In southerly winds, the final phase of landing must be performed only crosswind. During the summer season, landing is also possible at the end of the ski slope. However, this area is surrounded by tall trees and chairlift cables. Landing at this location is more or less possible only against a gentle slope in the south–north direction. The landing area is not visible from the take-off point.

DURING THE WINTER SEASON, LANDING ON SKI SLOPES IS PROHIBITED!

Landing area – Repiská

An area located approximately 1 km south of the lower part of the ski resort. It consists of undulating meadows and small patches of forest. The entire area is uneven in various directions and includes scattered cottage-type buildings. It is more or less divided in a north–south direction by power lines, which are clearly visible.

DUE TO THE UNEVEN TERRAIN, LANDING WITH A HANG GLIDER IS MORE DEMANDING.

Fees

The use of the take-off area at Kubínska hoľa is free of charge.

Transport and return from the landing area to the take-off point

Chairlift transport in accordance with the valid price list.

Flight area restrictions

There are no restrictions, except for the maximum flight level for free flying in Slovakia – 2450 m MSL (FL 80). The Orava region, as a whole, is the only part of Slovakia where no additional restrictions apply (see ICAO map).
