We have selected the TOP 8 castles and châteaux in Slovakia, which impress not only with beautiful architecture and preserved spaces, but are also places of many events, entertainment, and interesting programmes during the season.

Bratislava Castle

Bratislava Castle is an unmistakable landmark of the capital city of Slovakia. The symbol of Bratislava proudly rises above the Danube and has a rich history that began as early as the 11th century. Its fame grew from the second half of the 16th century, when Bratislava became the coronation city, and until the mid-18th century it was a favourite residence of monarchs. It underwent significant reconstructions during the reign of Maria Theresa.

However, Bratislava Castle did not avoid burning down and almost became a ruin. Its restoration and reconstruction began in the 1950s until it reached the form we know today. In addition to permanent exhibitions, monuments, and displays that show visitors the history of the city, Bratislava Castle is a venue for cultural and social events. Great attention is drawn to medieval harvest festivals, concerts, and opera festivals, as well as the most famous events – the Summer Shakespeare Festival and the Bratislava Coronation Days.

Did you know that Bratislava Castle is misleading in its “appearance”? It seems to have a square layout, but in reality its ground plan is irregular, which is best seen from above. It also does not have four towers, although it appears so at first glance. There is only one functional tower – located on the southwest side. The other small towers are merely added onto the roof.

Bojnice Castle

One of the most beautiful and most visited romantic castles in Central Europe can be found in Bojnice. As early as the beginning of the 12th century, a wooden fortification stood on a travertine rock. Throughout its history, today’s Bojnice Castle underwent many changes and functions. Its current form was created at the end of the 19th century by Count Ján Pálffy, who wished for the castle to resemble French châteaux in its architecture.

Visitors can access beautiful interiors filled with history. You will see the Count’s Apartment with the Golden Hall, the Huňady Hall, the Bojnice Altar, and individual floors with well-preserved Neo-Gothic interiors. Bojnice Castle is the venue of events that delight both children and adults, brave heroes and charming princesses. Events such as the Haunted Castle and the Fairy-tale Castle are worth experiencing with your own eyes. We must not forget the picturesque surroundings of Bojnice Castle and the performances of falconers. Nearby is Bojnice Zoothe most visited and oldest zoological garden in Slovakia.

Červený Kameň Castle

On the southeastern slope of the Little Carpathians near Modra, perched on a quartzite cliff, stands Červený Kameň Castle. In the 16th century it was a massive fortress with a defensive system that represented the pinnacle of military strategy at the time and was ultra-modern for its era. From the beginning of the 17th century it became associated with the Pálffy family, when the fortress was gradually transformed into a noble residence with many representative and residential rooms.

Červený Kameň Castle was never conquered, and thanks to its grandeur and excellent condition it became a popular location for filmmakers. Works such as Salt Above Gold, The Incredibly Sad Princess, Fantaghiro, and Dragonheart were filmed here. Besides permanent exhibitions of historical furniture, weapons, and period living, the castle attracts visitors with regularly organised events. It hosts harvest festivals, concerts, theatre and puppet shows, craft festivals, antique markets, knightly festivals, and falconry shows.

Did you know that beneath this castle lie the largest castle cellars in Central Europe with a sophisticated ventilation system? Even modern trucks would fit inside them!

Zvolen Castle

The beautifully renovated Zvolen Castle is located almost in the centre of the town of Zvolen. Its beginnings date back to the second half of the 14th century, when it was built as a hunting lodge and later served as a luxurious and comfortable residence for Hungarian queens. Although it had no military or defensive purpose, during reconstruction in the 16th century it was given fortifications, towers, and embrasures around its entire perimeter and temporarily served as an anti-Turkish fortress.

Throughout its long history it has been the seat of Zvolen’s župans (regional leaders), offices, barracks, and schools. Since 1965, the castle has been part of the Slovak National Gallery, which uses it for exhibition purposes. Enthusiasts of old European fine art will appreciate it here. The unique castle courtyard and interiors regularly host events of the popular summer theatre festival Zámocké hry zvolenské.

Vígľaš Castle

First it was a fortified settlement, later a monastery, and by the end of the 14th century already a royal hunting residence. In the 16th century it played a role in battles against Turkish raids, and at the end of World War II it suffered severe damage and burned down. If you were to look today at the impressive Vígľaš Castle, located in the village of Vígľaš between Lučenec and Zvolen, you would see an extensive reconstruction thanks to which it literally rose from ruins…

Vígľaš Castle was reopened in 2014 as The Grand Vígľaš*** – a congress hotel offering wellness services. Guided tours take place on weekdays, and during summer weekends there are also tours accompanied by falconers. The castle offers not only attractive accommodation but also relaxation, excellent gastronomy, weddings, and celebrations. Theatre and musical performances as well as popular cultural events are also held here – for example the Sigismund Festivities and the spooky night tours of the castle, where you may even encounter ghosts.

Kežmarok Castle

On the eastern edge of the town of Kežmarok lies the historical landmark of the region beneath the Tatras – Kežmarok Castle. It is the only fully preserved castle in Spiš. Its origins date back to the mid-15th century. Originally it was built as a fortress protecting the free royal town. It passed through the hands of many owners, which left it with Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements.

At Kežmarok Castle visitors can explore historical exhibitions showing the development and history of the town. Interesting are also exhibitions dedicated to guilds and crafts, the shooting association, historical vehicles, and weapons. Several legends and tales circulate about Kežmarok Castle, and guides will tell you all about them. For example, you will learn that a Black Lady is said to haunt the castle to this day! Ľubovňa Castle

Castles in Slovakia served mainly defensive purposes. It was no different in the case of Ľubovňa Castle, which was a border watch castle protecting trade routes to Poland. The first written mention of the castle dates back to the early 14th century. Throughout its history it became the site of important meetings of kings, the hiding of coronation jewels, and the imprisonment of Móric Beňovský.

The popularity of Ľubovňa Castle, located above Stará Ľubovňa, continues to grow, with approximately 200,000 visitors per year. The reason is its engaging exhibitions, which are regularly changed. It also surprises with numerous events. Ľubovňa Castle is the venue of concerts, theatre performances, and grand events such as the Castle Festivities and the Cyril-Methodius Celebrations. The authenticity of the beautiful scenery is complemented by the open-air museum beneath the castle, which consists of a collection of folk buildings from nearby villages.
